Alberta Leads on Milk & Protein Yield Western-based provinces in Canada - Alta’s traditional Canadian stronghold - fare well in a Nation-wide comparison of Holstein milk and protein yields. National DHI statistics for 2002 show Western Canadian Holstein cows having completed an official record in 2002 to hold a significant lead over all other Canadian regions.
Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) phenotypic data provides additional detail with Alberta taking the Provincial lead for both average milk and protein yield among officially recorded Holstein cows born in 2000.
The results suggest a greater attention to production traits by dairy producers in Canada’s Western provinces – particularly with respect to milk and protein yield. And in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba where Holstein pedigrees run deep with Alta breeding, it suggests that genetics have played a role as well. The results provide tangible evidence of Alta’s commitment to helping producers make more money. Alta is a proud contributor to genetic improvement in Canada. Posted June 30th |
