Ramos daughters – they last!

It’s hard to imagine that Ramos, the German proven Rudolph son, already has a daughter in 4th lactation. Ramos, who was added to the Alta sire lineup in August, 2002 has since gained a reputation as the prototype for longer-living healthy cows. In fact, Ramos is Alta’s highest rated HealthPlus sire with an index rating of +2.86. Regular calving daughters that remain in the herd is the proof that Ramos is indeed the ideal HealthPlus sire.

So what makes Ramos so strong on Health traits? Why are they able to calve on a regular basis and remain trouble free? Looking at Ramos’ proof numbers it is easy to see why:

  • 1. Based on over 25,000 calvings Ramos is an extreme Calving Ease sire. Most bulls with this attribute also display strong Daughter Calving Ease scores as well. Clearly when cows calve easily there is a positive relationship with reproductive function as well. In the US, Ramos is rated 7 for CE and 6 for daughter CE which adds weight to his German score.
  • 2. Proof information for Ramos’ reproductive score supports that daughters are very fertile in Germany his rating is 110 which is extremely good. In US terms his DPR rating is +1.6 which is also very high.
  • 3. Ramos has a SCS rating of 134 in Germany – unbelievable! Converted to a US basis at 2.63 he is equally regarded as an extreme improver here. What’s more, this exceptional rating does not come at the expense of Milking Speed as Ramos is rated 102 in Germany.
  • 4. With scores of 127 for Udder and 120 for F&L, Ramos delivers on the type traits that promote longer living cows.
  • 5. Ramos daughters are not extremely angular cows – they carry a bit of flesh and this is likely responsible in part for their strong reproductive abilities.
  • 6. When you add it all together Ramos is the extreme longevity sire in Germany rated 126. In the US the data suggests we can expect the same based on his +3.9 PL rating. That suggests almost 4 extra months of productive life from a typical Ramos daughter compared to average – what’s that worth?
  • 7. Both TPI and NM$ formulas reflect the all-round abilities of Ramos. Not only are they durable, they are productive too. Ramos is rated +1707 TPI and +661 NM$ which puts him right up there with the breed leaders.
