Cow families supply the Type we like!

by Roger Turner, Regional Sire Analyst, Alta Genetics Inc.

On April 6, 2005 the Alta Nucleus Herd at Coopon Flora Farm received its first classification of the year. After finishing off 2004 with eight new VG 2yr-olds, we’re off to a great start once again.

There’s been much excitement in the past few months at the Alta Nucleus. The exceptional individuals that we’re calving are delivering “The type we like”.

Holstein Canada Classifier Mr. Don Hess evaluated each individual with great expertise, providing precise reasons to confirm his decisions. Don commented on the great overall type of the 2yr-olds in the Nucleus Herd: “this is the second time in the last three years that I have classified at the Alta Nucleus Herd and while Alta has always had great individuals at the top end achieving VG at 2yrs, the overall conformation level on the 2yr-olds has improved dramatically. They are a real balanced group with strong dairy frames.”

The highest score of the day belonged to the one and only BOFRAN IGNITER LOVELY scoring at VG-87 in her second lactation after freshening in January with a fancy Wizard heifer calf. LOVELY hails from the strongest cow family in Canada, the Comestar Laurie Sheik family.

LOVELY scored the maximum, EX 3, for Frame & Capacity and also EX 3 for Dairy Character. Her pedigree is Igniter EX Extra x VG-85 4* Rudolph x VG-88 2* Lindy that completed over 42,000 lb of 4.7% fat. The next dam is the famous brood cow and matron of the family, Comestar Laurie Sheik VG-88 23* herself. Bofran Igniter Lovely VG-87

If Laurie Sheik is the strongest brood cow in Canada then without question Snow-N-Denises Dellia EX-95 2E 3* GMD DOM is the strongest breeding female in the USA. Dellia is the foundation for our highest scoring 2yr-old this round. Ringing in at VG-86 at 2yrs is KOZDALE-I BW MARSHALL WAND VG-86. Cut out just the way you love a 2yr-old to be WAND VG-86 has a perfectly shaped udder with great texture, venation, and strong attachments both fore and rear with a strong deep well-defined median suspensory ligament. Wand VG-86 is long, dairy, sharp front ended with breed character just pouring from her.

Her breakdown describes her perfectly: EX Dairy Character, VG Frame & Capacity, VG Mammary System and VG Rump. She offers complete excitement, being only one of two VG BW Marshall daughters in Canada and from the Dellia family. WAND VG-86 has a VG-87 WADE dam , second dam is the EX-90 4* GMD DOM Leadman Dolly then followed by Dellia EX-95 2E 3* GMD DOM.

Alta kept rolling out beautiful young 2yr-olds all day long but the final 2yrold to score VG for the day was ZIMMERVIEW-I BW MARSHALL JEANETTE VG-85.

Zimmerview-I BW Marshall Jeanette VG-85

This silky-hided young cow has it all: the balance the shapely well-attached udder; the strong centre ligament; the width of chest; the clean flat bone; the depth of fore and rear rib; all riding on a true type set of feet and legs – clean flat bone, ideal set, perfect locomotion, with a strong foot and heel depth. Jeanette also has the cow family backing her, making her the total package. Her dam is a VG-86 GMD Winchester daughter. The second dam is VG-86 GMD DOM sired by Elton, the third dam a VG-88 DOM Enhancer; the fourth dam is a VG-87 daughter of SWD Valiant. A sire stack that’s a “Who’s Who” in the industry makes Jeanette a focus of attention as we drive forward with the “The type we like” in the Nucleus Herd.

We are extremely excited about the great young cows we have in our Alta Nucleus Herd. These are just a few of the classification highlights. Other young cows that classified well are: Mtoto Gudiva VG-86, Adam Adena VG-86, Inquirer Happy VG-85, Blitz Triage GP-84 and Adam Adelia GP-84. Be sure to watch for more exciting news from the Nucleus in the near future as we deliver the next generation of genetics!
