Panel Discussion Proves 20-25% Pregnancy Rates Can Be Achieved
With hundreds of dairymen and industry leaders attending Alta California’s 2005 reproductive seminars entitled “Don’t Gamble With Your Reproduction” last month, one message was clear: dairymen know the value of a pregnancy and are willing to adapt improved management practices to increase pregnancy rates.

In May, Alta California teamed up with a panel of local veterinarians to offer dairy owners and managers, as well as industry representatives the opportunity to participate in an open forum discussion addressing important factors affecting a sound breeding program. We have all heard and seen dairy operations which consistently achieve 20-25% Pregnancy Rates (or greater), the question then, is why some herds achieve these results while others seem to struggle reproductively. This year’s seminars then, showcased area veterinarians who, like dairymen, face the challenges of achieving superior reproductive results in the California dairy environment.

Offering suggestions and ideas for obtaining higher pregnancy rates, each presenter tackled a specific area of importance related to improved reproduction. Dr. Mark Brandt of Mid Valley Large Animal Service stressed the importance of preparing cows for success and having adequate transition periods prior to breeding, beginning with a proper dry period and through the fresh and transition periods. Dr. Norm LaFaunce of Lander Veterninary Clinic discussed the voluntary waiting period, uterine physiology during this critical time, and how dairymen can best determine when to start breeding cows in their specific breeding program. Dr. John Lee of Atwater-Merced Veterinary Clinics, Inc. discussed the role that sound synchronization programs play in today’s reproductive programs, as well as methods of maximizing synchronization programs for success.

All in all, these seminars, held in three cities throughout the valley, provided dairymen and industry leaders alike, the opportunity to exchange information and experiences on reproductive management and work collectively to obtain the common goal of improved reproduction.
Alta California has been involved in the AI and reproductive consulting business for the past 50 years, and continues to be an aggressive and practical leader in dairy reproduction. They will be hosting additional reproductive seminars this fall in southern California.
