Alta Builds new Stud in Brazil First 40 bulls have arrived Strong growth and tremendous potential are behind Alta’s decision to build a new 150 bull AI center in Uberaba, the heart of the Zebu breeding industry in Brazil. Although construction is not yet completed the first 40 bulls have arrived and the semen collection and processing functions are now under way in the state of the art facilities. Previously Alta had outsourced the housing of bulls and semen collection functions to other AI centers in Brazil. With enormous sales growth continuing unabated and production costs therefore also increasing substantially, the decision for Alta to build its own AI center was a natural progression. Increased flexibility and greater control over quality control while reducing production costs are expected outcomes of this important investment for Alta’s future in Brazil. In designing an AI center from the ground up, Alta chose for efficiency: the sketch below provides a visual of the wagon-wheel design that has been implemented. In the center of the wheel one finds the semen collection and lab. All around the center bulls are housed in outdoor pens with shelters, ensuring that the walk for any bull to the collection room is minimal. Alta Brazil was established in 1996 and since then has enjoyed unprecedented growth. From a respectable 60,000 dose sales effort in its first year, today Alta Brazil enjoys sales of 1.2 million doses. As a result Alta has become one of the three dominant players in the Brazilian AI industry. The continued potential for growth in this market is very large thanks to a population of more than 110 million cows, 17% of which are Holstein. The much larger 83% reflects Brazil’s vibrant beef sector with Zebu and (Red) Angus as the predominant breeds. Alta Brazil is extremely successful thanks to its approach in providing valuable services and programs in the market such as technician service, DIY insemination courses and the introduction of various mating programs. Furthermore, Alta has positioned itself to be a key exporter of Brazilian domestic breeds to other South American markets as well as to Africa, India and China.
