Wildman Excitement Continues by Jeannie Winkelman, Midwest Advantage Consultant In mid-October, I had the opportunity to picture 3 AltaWildman daughters…for a total of 4 since the beginning of September. This bull continues to put fancy, functional cows into commercial dairies where competition is the name of the game. Altogether, I have seen 20 AltaWildman daughters in the Midwest, and all I can say is WOW! A few weeks ago, Jeff West (DSM) and John Weaver (ADR) from Ontario, Canada helped picture these 3 great cows in Michigan, and also had a chance to see the AltaWildman and other Alta daughters at both Steenbliks and Green Meadows. Their comments echo those of Roger Turner, RSA earlier in September-the excitement is real! According to Jeff, “AltaWildman can add that style and balance that we all like to see in a cow. Combined with this, he adds openness of rib and body depth that give them that balanced look…Getting in behind these 2-year olds you can see the beautiful wide, rear udders with lots of support in the median suspensory ligament. The AltaWildman daughters look like they have the will to milk in combination with their strength and dairyness.” I couldn’t describe the daughters any better than that – they are certainly the “we-like” kind with lots of style! Here are some updates on the cows we just pictured:
Tall, silky cows continue to add to the pattern on AltaWildman. Green Meadow Farms in Elsie, MI, is home to 4 AltaWildman daughters, which all compete against a total of 3200 cows. Carilyn is easy to pick out of her large pen as a picture perfect example of the balanced, beautiful cows that AltaWildman will sire. A very stylish cow, Carilyn is wide through her chest, has tremendous depth, openness and spring of barrel, and her width comes back all the way through her to her rump. A high, wide rear udder attachment compliments this width and her udder seam is extremely deep and defined. Currently, she is milking 84 lbs of milk, 150 DIM. Her 305 ME is projected at 26,850 lbs.
Continuing to show his ‘stuff’ at Steenbliks in Pewamo, MI, AltaWildman now has 8 daughters making Steenbliks big money and breeding back! #5881 is currently milking 99 lbs. milk at 181 DIM. She is projected to have a 305 day record of 30,361 lbs! To top the cake-she’s already 100 days safe in calf. With her welded on fore udder and superb height and width of rear udder, it’s easy for her to do this at her home of 1700 cows!
Another fancy daughter, cow #5918 at Steenbliks is also putting her heart and soul into her job. She’s 140 DIM, and currently milking 98 lbs per day! She is also a dream to work with: she’s 70 days pregnant and will finish her 305 day lactation at 27,910 pounds of milk! With a deep heel and terrific foot structure, the rear legs on the daughters continue to impress me. Slightly straighter in the hock, the cows travel freely on their legs with no troubles. Although our first proof on AltaWildman will only have officially 21 type daughters-You can see from these 3 photos in addition to the other professional shots and over 20 working shots already in place on the website that this bull sires the kind of consistency and uniformity that we all desire – he stamps them the WILDMAN way!
