Proper Semen Handling & Good Sanitary Procedures are the Key to A.I. Success

First of all check the breeding record of the cow you are about to impregnate. This will provide key information about the breeding status of the cow. If the cow’s last estrus or the breeding dates does not match with the current estrus date, the cow should not be bred before getting her checked. If everything on the breeding record looks normal, prepare to breed the cow.

TIPS: The cow or heifer to be inseminated must be properly restrained in an area familiar to the animal. It is imperative to keep her calm.

Load the semen into the inseminationgun and then make the record of the sire identification code used. Wrap the loaded insemination gun with a paper towel and put it inside your shirt or coveralls.

Put a shoulder length disposable plastic glove on the arm which will not be handling the insemination gun. Usually a right handed person use their left hand in the cow. Lubricate the sleeve with a small amount of A.I. lube or mineral oil; however, do not use soap or lubricants containing disinfectants. As you approach the cow, stand sideways behind her. This position not only helps in entering the rectum, but will also help in protecting you from dangerous kicks. The new step is to enter the rectum. Gently rub the anal area with the lubed gloved hand. This will transmit the lube to the anal area and also relax the muscles. Form a cone with your fingers. Insert the hand through the anal opening and at the same time pull on the cows tail with your free hand to provide an equal and opposite force to enter into the rectum. Move the tail away from the arm in the rectum.

Once the hand is fully in the rectum, open up the fingers from the cone position, push down to the pelvic floor and locate the cervix by moving the hand from side to side. If excessive fecal matter is present, remove it by cupping the hand and pulling it out without taking your hand out. Avoid excessive in and out motion of your arm in the rectum because it causes air to rush in the rectum resulting in a “ballooning” effect. If this happens, you will not be able to grasp the cervix.

Holding the Cervix Properly
Location of the cervix is quite varied. It may be within the pelvic cavity or resting on the pelvic rim. The pelvic rim is a useful landmark which you can locate by first feeling the floor of the pelvis and then following the bone forward to the rim. By running the hand around the rim from one side to the other, the cervix can be located. In heifers the cervix is usually situated on the pelvic floor in the middle or slightly inclined to the right.

Primero que todo revise los registros de inseminación de la vaca que va a ser inseminada. Esto proveerá información importante acerca del estado repro ductivo del animal. Si el ultimo estro de la vaca, o las fechas de inseminación no concuerdan con la fecha del presente estro, no se debe inseminar el animal sin ser revisado. Si todo en el registro de inseminación parece normal preparece para inseminar la vaca.

CONSEJOS: La vaca o novilla que va a ser inseminada debe ser asegurada en un area familiar al animal. Es imperativomantener al animal calmado.

Ponga la pajilla dentro de la pistola de inseminación artificial y registre el código de identificación del toro ubicado en la pajilla usada.Envuelva la pistola de inseminación en una toalla de papel y colóquela dentro de su camisa o uniforme. Póngase una manga plástica desechable en el brazo con el que no va a sostener la pistola de inseminación. Usualmente una persona diestra usa la mano izquierda en la vaca. Lubrique la manga con una pequeña cantidad de lubricante o aceite mineral. Sin embargo no use jabón o lubricantes que contienen desinfectantes. Al acercarse a la vaca, párese al lado de ella. Esta posición no solo le ayuda a entrar en el recto sino también le ayudara a protegerlo de patadas peligrosas. El siguiente paso es entrar en el recto. Frote suavemente el area anal con la mano que tiene el guante lubricado. Esto permitirá lubricar y relajar los músculos del esfínter anal. Forme un cono con sus dedos . Introduzca la mano a través del esfínter anal y al mismo tiempo sujete la cola de la vaca con la mano libre para proveer una fuerza igual para entrar en el recto. Mueva la cola a un lado para su comodidad. Una vez la mano se encuentre totalmente en el recto, extienda los dedos de la posición de cono, presione el piso pélvico y localice el cervix moviendo la mano de lado a lado. Si hay un exceso de materia fecal presente, rermuevala sin sacar la mano del recto. Evite excesivos movimientos de su brazo hacia dentro y hacia afuera en el recto, porque esto causa la formación de aire en el recto provocando así el efecto de balón. Si esto pasa usted no sera capaz de sujetar el cervix.

Sostenimiento apropiado del cervix.
La localización del cervix varia. El puede estar entre la cavidad pélvica o descansando sobre el anillo pélvico. El anillo pélvico es una reseña de gran ayuda, la cual usted puede localizar sintiendo primero el piso de la pelvis y después siguiendo este hueso adelante hacia el anillo. Deslizando la mano alrededor del aro de un lado al otro, el cervix puede ser localizado. En novillas el cervix esta usualmente situado sobre la mitad del piso pélvico o ligeramente inclinado a la derecha.
