Alta Junior Challenge Continues to Gain Popularity With Youth

The 3rd Annual Alta Junior Challenge took place June 30 – July 2 in Richmond, Quebec. During the event, 150 animals were presented, representing Holstein, Jersey and Ayrshire breeds, and the Judge for the weekend was Brian Carscadden of Guelph, ON.

The event, sponsored and organized by Alta Genetics Inc., has grown in popularity since its debut in 2004, with a 20% increase in participants this year from 2005. Youth representing the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes came to compete during a fun-filled Canada Day long weekend.

Participation in the Alta Jr. Challenge requires skills that reach far beyond those needed in the show ring. Competitors are also responsible for a stall display for each respective club, which promotes youth to work together as a team to keep the stall and display area as tidy as possible. On the social side, an intramural volleyball tournament and many other “challenges” take place throughout the event. Jr. Challenge participants get the opportunity to meet people from other regions in Eastern Canada, make new friends, and fully appreciate the importance of working through language barriers.

Every year Alta awards a $1000 scholarship to the Grand Champion Showman. On day one of the competition Cory Dickson of Joyceville, ON, captured this title and the scholarship. Alta also presented 6 additional scholarships of $250 and $500 drawn at random from all the participants. The recipients of these scholarships were: Tommy Côté, Angela Neal, Jessica Lemire, Daniel Elgili, Francis Ghielen and Jacob Morin.
In addition, a draw was made for 2 high quality embryos, generously donated by Lookout Jerseys & Holsteins, and won by David Bilodeau and Johanie Lalumière.

As the conformation classes wrapped up on the second day of competition the following Supreme Champion banners were awarded:

Supreme Champion:
Belfontaine Dundee Abigail (HO), exhibited by Marie-Christine Fontaine, St-Marc, QC

Reserve Supreme Champion:
Bridon Regency Pinsilah (JE), exhibited by Alana McKinven, Canton de Hatley, QC.

Honourable Mention:
Pierstein Lee Belita (HO), exhibited by Sandra Ghielen, Champlain, QC.

The organizing committee would like to sincerely thank Alta’s partnering sponsor of the event, the Quebec Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, for their generous donations. A big thank you is also given to the other well deserving sponsors who support the Challenge year after year by encouraging the next generation of dairy breeders who come to compete.

As planning for the 4th Edition of the Alta Jr. Challenge begins, the organizing committee would like to extend the invitation to this year’s participants to register and invite other’s to register for an exciting weekend at the 2007 Alta Junior Challenge in Richmond, QC.
