Global Diversity Pays Off...Again!

The August 2006 global sire update proves once again that Global Diversity pays off. Alta’s extensive sampling programs in Canada and the Netherlands, as well as the Advantage® program in the US, not only allow Alta to harvest the most trustworthy information in the industry, but it also allows the company to meld bloodlines from a variety of geographic locations. The choice for genetic diversity on the global level is paying huge dividends for Alta customers today.

Alta success stories from each of its three programs support this claim. The new #3 LPI bull in Canada, AltaINTRUDER, is sired by Alta’s US developed bull, AltaHERSHEL, and hails from the highly acclaimed Pennview “I” cow family bred by Pennview Farm, Blumenort, Manitoba, Canada AltaRESTHA, an exciting new Conformation specialist from the Netherlands, is sired by an extremely well respected second crop success story from France, JESTHER, and credits a Dutch female line, the “Rita” family, that is among the most respected by European breeders. Finally, the Alta Advantage® tested bull AltaOLIVER (limited availability) who ranks among the TPI leaders, owes his existence to a branch of the famous Lou Etta family developed in the Netherlands, and he is also sired by the US bull AltaHERSHEL. Alta’s biggest proof day highlight! AltaINTRUDER is the new #3 LPI bull in Canada!! He boasts extreme production with outstanding Type from a family that is well known for making long-wearing cows. He’s among the best in Canada and a perfect fit for customers looking for hard-working cows that make it look easy, milking from their strength.

AltaRESTHA - Willem’s Hoeve Restha - JESTHER x LORD LILY x SUNNY BOY
From one of the most bankable cow families in the Netherlands, AltaRESTHA is one of the industry’s first proven JESTHER sons. Although it’s early, AltaRESTHA looks very promising delivering lots of Milk and super Type.

AltaCESAS - Belgia Cesas - CELLO x LORD LILY x MASCOT
Also from across the water, AltaCESAS makes his debut in the Alta lineup. His sire CELLO has been a respected second crop success story in the Netherlands, so it is pleasing to offer a well proven son. Solid Type, Udder Health and cows built to last is what customers can expect from this bull.

AltaCHRONICLE - Nordic-Haven Charlton - BW MARSHALL x AltaFORMATION x MANDEL
Another strong Conformation bull who bucks the BW MARSHALL trend for health traits. AltaCHRONICLE sires strong Udder improvement along with pleasing production and respectable components too. He’s a balanced-across-the-board kind of bull that will benefit any breeding program.

AltaJUNEAU – Ronland Juneau - BW MARSHALL x MANFRED x RUDOLPH
AltaJUNEAU, already awarded ConceptPlus status, boasts a tremendous health trait profile. No wonder with bulls like MANFRED, RUDOLPH and BLACKSTAR backing up his sire! He also shows promise in the Type department with daughters displaying lots of strength and great Feet & Legs.

AltaJURYMAN - O-Bee Juryman – AltaHERSHEL x TERRY x ELTON
If there was a “Most Improved” award to be handed out, it would surely go to AltaJURYMAN who gains 80 TPI points from his impressive debut in May! His gains come from significant improvements to all production traits as well as for Type - especially Udder Composite. Already pushing the 100 daughter mark, great confidence can be placed in AltaJURYMAN’s ability to deliver exceptional profit improvement.

AltaARMSTRONG - Canyon-Breeze Armstrong – BW MARSHALL x EMORY x WISTER
Another bull that has made strides in his Production and Health numbers is AltaARMSTRONG. He has significantly improved yields for milk fat and protein and he is now a bon-a-fide HealthPlus bull. His calves are delivered easily – and they live! AltaARMSTRONG is another example of the increased confidence customers can place in his ability to deliver valuable genetic progress, as he now sports nearly 100 daughters in his Production proof.

Breed leading Type and Udders is what you can expect from MAC. Yes… he is for real! 22 newly scored daughters have pushed MAC’s type numbers through the roof! You won’t see it reflected in his proof numbers, but the spotlight continues to shine on AltaWILDMAN - and for good reason. AltaWILDMAN’s second lactation daughters are making a splash everywhere. These pictures are worth thousands of words. Outstanding Production, awesome Type, impressive Fertility and now jaw-dropping Development too: this is a bull all dairy producers should have in their semen tank. He is that good.

Focus on Health Traits

August proofs saw a significant re-working for the calculation of the Productive Life (PL) trait, where credit is now given for production beyond the 305-day mark. The resulting proof scale has changed and some re-ranking has occurred but Alta sires continue to lead the way. New Stillbirth evaluations also made their debut, providing another valuable tool for producers to reduce calf losses. Several Alta sires again provide reliable leadership – none more-so than RAMOS who now sports 9000 daughters in his proof. And while RAMOS leads the way, Alta’s list of Health trait leaders – over half of which include second crop daughters – is enough to convince any producer about where to source bulls with an ability to deliver healthy, trouble-free cows:

Fertility Leadership

Alta’s ConceptPlus program also continues to set the industry standard for reliable sire fertility prediction.
