AltaAdvantage® Showcase – Day 3

The modern, progressive dairy is not just about leadership in terms of innovative management practices. Progressive dairy farmers are also assuming the leadership to take a positive message directly to consumers by showcasing how they produce healthy milk and care for their livestock. There is perhaps no better example than Fair Oaks Farms, which was a key stop on Day 3 of the Alta Advantage® Showcase.

Walk through the wooden doors of a building that houses a shrine to milk and the active living lifestyle, and you can’t help but forget about every soda pop and juice commercial you ever saw.
The impressive display makes one come to understand and truly appreciate the quality and importance of milk.

The familiar “3-A-Day” brand is displayed
throughout the Dairy Adventure Center,
clearly associating milk consumption with
healthy living.

This Fair Oaks Farms location is open to
the public for viewing, including an
observation deck for watching the 72
rotary cow parlor in operation.

Consumers today are growing more distant from their rural roots, and have questions about how milk reaches their grocery store shelf. Through interactive displays, demonstrations, and information, Fair Oaks Farms is being proactive and taking the mystery out of the dairy industry.

Fair Oaks Farms is a progressive dairy operation that includes about 28,000 milk cows located in 9 different locations nearby Fair Oaks, Indiana. This dairy has installed manure digesters to produce electricity, plus has invested great resources in opening up its facility to the public. The Dairy Adventure Center walks guests through a “grass to glass” tour that includes seeing cows being milked, housed and fed, and giving birth live.

Approximately 7 to 10 cows and heifers
are brought to the “birthing barn” at the
Dairy Adventure Center to calve. Guests
sit in auditorium seating to welcome new
calves and take away a lasting experience.

Alta is proud to provide genetic products and services to several of the Fair Oaks Farms locations.

Without a doubt, Fair Oaks Farms is a leader in promoting the dairy industry in America. But it isn’t just Fair Oaks that is intent on being a “good neighbor” and “contributing member of the community.”

The 6 Alta Advantage® partner dairies visited on Days 1 and 2 of the Showcase tour also testified to their commitment to being good stewards during farm tours and presentations. Innovations in manure management and commitment to cow comfort are also common goals in Alta Advantage® herds.

Changing paradigms and tackling challenges head on is what today’s progressive dairies must do. And it’s not enough to just do it on the farm. As dairies grow and expand, it is important to maintain and encourage the understanding of the community and the consumer. On this point, it’s clear that the Fair Oaks Farms cream is rising to the top!

The Dairy Adventure Centre uses creative
displays and state of the art media to leave
a lasting impression on an urban audience.
