Jersey Udder IndexTM (JUI) Addition

The May 2007 proof run will bring about an exciting new index for dairymen milking Jersey cattle. The American Jersey Cattle Association will publish for the first time an udder composite index called Jersey Udder IndexTM (JUI). The new formula has been taken from the Functional Type Index (FTI), which has been part of the breeds JPITM index for many years. Both the FTI and JUITM are weighted toward lifetime profitability based on research conducted by Dr. Ronald Pearson of Virginia Tech.

JUITM offers an easy option to look at bulls for the udders they transmit to their daughters. On a percentage basis, JUI™ is comprised of:
34% Rear Udder Height
25% Rear Udder Depth
21% Rear Udder Width
8% Fore Udder Attachment
5% Teat Placement
5% Teat Length
2% Udder Cleft

The first three traits (RUW, UD, RUH) combine to make up 80% of value in the index.
Jersey Udder IndexTM (JUI) = 0.32 (PTA Fore Udder) + 1.33 (PTA Rear Udder Height) + 0.82 (PTA Rear Udder Width) +1.00 (PTA Udder Depth) + 0.06 (PTA Udder Cleft) + 0.19 (PTA Teat Placement) + 0.21 (PTA Teat Length)

For additional information on the Jersey Udder IndexTM please contact the American Jersey Cattle Association or the Alta Jersey Specialists.
