A Promise Kept

It’s easy to make a promise – making good on it is the harder part.

History was made at the 2007 Royal Winter Fair Holstein show where the long touted “King of the Ring” – Lystel Leduc – was named Premier Sire of the show for a 5th consecutive year. It’s a feat no other sire has ever accomplished at this great show. Preceding the 5 overall titles, Leduc also lays claim to two junior show awards which help extend his reign to an uninterrupted 7 year span. The bold title used to promote the bull may have raised a few eyebrows back in 2002. Perceived as boastful to some back then, today it appears more like a refreshing dose of honesty.

Granted, shows and show winnings are not a big part of Alta’s focus these days, but there is a great deal of pride in the result, just the same. A claim was made. More importantly, even the most critical skeptics out there would concede that Leduc has indeed earned the King of the Ring title – each year, but especially this year, – with his 5th consecutive Premier Sire title delivered emphatically through individual daughter performances that included both the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion of the show. Add one more milking class winner and 9 milking daughters in total that posted top-10 results and the result becomes academic. Indeed he remains the King of the Ring.

And before we dismiss the accomplishments of Leduc’s champion daughters as coincidental, let’s take a closer look at their careers to date:

Silverridge Leduc Noleta VG-89-2yr-old – sold for big money as a young calf, this one has delivered by competing at the top shows each year since her birth. She’s been nominated for All-Canadian status 5 years in a row (2002 to 2006) and it should be fairly safe to say a 6th consecutive nomination is in the bag thanks to her Grand Champion status at the 2007 Royal. In the meantime, she has completed two enormous production records and is milking up a storm again. She’s no flash in the pan! A well deserved congratulations is extended to her owners Chilliwack Cattle Co and R&F Livestock, Warman, Saskatchewan and to her breeder Silverridge Holsteins, Springfield, ON.

Tomalyn Leduc Della – EX-95 – she burst onto the scene in the fall of 2005 at the Westerner Championship show in Red Deer and soon after made the trek to her first Royal Winter Fair as a milking cow. Three years in a row she has followed this pattern and each year she has won her class at the Royal. She already has All-Canadian awards for her achievements in 2005 and 2006 and it is a relatively safe assumption that she will repeat on her 2007 performance. Three years in a row at the top of her game, she’s calved three times too with impressive reproductive and production performances as well. Arguably, she’s the most complete performer on the show circuit today! Congratulations go to her owns Huddlesford Holsteins (UK) and Morsan Farms Ltd, Ponoka, AB as well as to her breeder Tomalynn Farms, Omemee, ON.

The 2007 Royal results continue a pattern that has been unfolding for more than a decade now, where Alta sires have laid claim to Premier Sire banners in each of the last 6 years and in 8 of the last 11. Although small by comparison to the cooperative giant that dominates the Canadian market, there should be no doubt that Alta’s participation in the market has made a positive impact – has delivered results for Canadian dairy producers. And that’s as it should be. After all those words “Deliver Results” are included right in Alta’s mission statement. The complete line reads “Create Value – Build Trust – Deliver Results” and they are words that each Alta employee will know well. For they are not just words; at each position in the company these are words to live by.

It starts with value creation through the products, programs and services offered. A sincere desire to do it better, to make a difference to truly affect profitability in a positive manner is our objective. Slowly that genuine desire leads to a gaining of trust. Trust is also an outcome of how we design our programs, how we structure our service offering.

But the results must speak for themselves. That’s the Deliver Results part that we will ultimately be judged on. That could be the creation of a show winning daughter for a show enthusiast, but for many others, it is about delivering superior fertility performance or milking replacements that themselves excel on fertility and longevity in conjunction with superior production. And it’s the knowledge we bring to the farm too – the advice that is given the suggestions made that make a difference – that’s delivering results too.

Making promises is certainly the easy part. Delivering on those promises, that’s far more difficult. And while Alta is far from perfect, its record on many fronts – including the show ring – speaks for itself. Clearly Alta delivers results.
