What is the most ideal voluntary waiting period?

It seems there is a lot of variation in the voluntary waiting periods between dairies, so what is best or why should I choose for a short versus longer period?

The VWP is itself a paradox. Dairies must have pregnant cows to stay in business. Dairies must have productive cows to stay in business. The earlier the VWP the shorter the lactation. The later the VWP, the later the pregnancy. In an ideal world I suppose, you would breed animals to conceive for a 305 day lactation, or somewhere around 90 days. Since we don't live in an ideal world, we tend to breed earlier to account for those animals who don't conceive on the first service, and sacrifice the longer lactation of the ones that do.
