When a cow is hypoglycemic she will almost certainly extend her energy deficient period during lactation. Energy deficient cows are not usually concerned with pregnancy, or heat for that matter. Anestrus could result, and even if a protocol is used, she probably will be dealing with other metabolic issues that will prevent pregnancy. The best way to combat these issues is to implement a quality transition cow program to start the lactation off right.

Ketosis and first service conception rate

Cows with ketosis or elevated BHBA in early lactation will have a depressed conception rate on first service only. The conception rate depression will be at least 5% lower than normal cows. This is a performance reduction of 12% or more (5% / 40% = 12.5%).
