What should my PG-rate be on heifers- is there a way to monitor this accurately in DC305? Is there a way to use different VWP (voluntary waiting periods) for heifers?

Preg Risk in Heifers

May 19th 2011
A preg risk of 35% or greater is possible in heifers and should be the goal. Preg risk in heifers can be calculated by using the command "bredsum\ev(?)y" where (?) equals the voluntary wait period - or in this case the age in days when you start to breed virgin heifers. You should use the command "bredsum\eav(?)y if you are using natural service (bulls) along with your AI program.

Preg risk in heifers

Heifer repro programs performing at a high level can consistently achieve preg risks of 48-50%. Primary drivers to their success are: timely enrollment of all eligible heifers into the repro protocol, accurate and intense heat detection skills, and skilled AI technicians inseminating the heifers.

Beef Semen On Dairy Heifers

June 2nd 2011
There is a lot of talk around our area of using beef semen for cleanup on dairy heifers. They are saying that this will help drive conception rates and preg rate on later service animals. Is there any proof that this might work?

Preg risk in heifers

Variation of age in days (and size) of heifers at entry into the AI pen has significant influence on cost of raising heifers. Variation can be influenced by two primary factors: management system for entry into the AI pen and growth rates of the heifers prior to AI eligibility. If significant variation exists, you need ask yourself what is cauing the variation and consider opportunities to tighten the program.

The pregnancy risk calculation (using BREDSUM\EVY) will be influenced by this variation. DC305 created the AIDAT item to more accurately identify the start of AI eligibility and monitor reproductive efficiency from that point in time. High performing heifer programs that use AIDAT functionality in DC305 have consistently achieved pregnancy risks of 48-50%.
