How can we trust genomic tested bulls?

Don\'t we have to wait and see how the predictions on these young bulls come out when they are proven?

We already can see the results based on the last 2+ years!

If we take a trip back in time to the beginning of 2009 when the first genomic predictions were released, we had two selection decisions:
1) We could trust the new science and technology and use the best genomic tested sires
2) We could select bulls the same way as always - use the best daughter proven sires

Most of us chose the second option and took the "time will tell" approach to genomics. So how would we have done? If we went with the first selection strategy, and selected on TPI, then the top 10 Alta sires that would have been used (out of 200 which now have daughter proofs and had only genomic proofs in Jan'09) would have been:
1) AltaNATO
2) AltaRUSH
3) AltaR2
4) AltaENDURO
5) AltaLOCKLYN
6) AltaIOTA
7) AltaROSS
8) AltaMOB
9) AltaVETO
10) AltaFRANCO

These 10 bulls are all still within the top 28 of those 200, and the group averages 1926 TPI. Meanwhile, the top 10 daughter proven bulls from Jan'09 were:
1) AltaDORNE
2) AltaPRINCE
3) AltaBAXTER
4) AltaOMAX
5) AltaTARMAC
6) AltaHATLEY
7) AltaARMSTEAD
8) AltaALLEGRO
9) AltaMAXLIFE
10) AltaBAYSIDE

These 10 bulls are still very popular around the world, as their proofs have been very consistent, and they have proven to make profitable daughters around the world now, however the genetic advantage for the first group is clear.

Today the same choice exists. Our top 10 daughter proven sires average 2032 TPI, and meanwhile our top 10 G-stars average 2269 GTPI. Not every G-star will be better than every daughter-proven bull, but on average they will be.

Further, genomic predictions today are much more accurate than they were in 2009. We have more than tripled the number of animals in the reference population (which is used to make the predictions) since 2009, making todays predictions even better!

Similar examples can be used for Net Merit, Cheese Merit, or any other index or trait, but for purposes of this example, TPI is used.
