Precision feeding primarily applies to feeding dairy replacement heifers. In general, heifers are fed diets marginally higher in protein, energy and minerals than required but fed slightly less DM per day than they would normally consume. Diet compositions combined with precise feeding rates define precision feeding. Precision feeding has been demonstrated to reduce manure excretion and increase feeding efficiency without negative carryover effects. Reducing the amount of DM to less than 85-90 % of full intake may result in heifer behavior problems and thus should be avoided.
