What is current recommendation with feeding Anionic Salts? I used to hear it a lot, but recently there seems to be less momentum for this.

Anionic salts are chloride and (or) sulfate salts that can be fed to dry cows for counteracting the cations, potassium and sodium, contained in forages and concentrates which can increase sub-clinical and clinical milk fevers. Use of anionic salts had gained popularity even though they can be costly and are unpalatable ingredients. However, greater use of corn silage and straw and controlled-fertility forages, which are low in cations, in dry cow diets has lessened the need for anionic salts. I suspect this is why you are not encountering them as much these days. The recommendation is to test forages for cations and anions to calculate the dietary-cation-anionic difference of the dry cow diet, and use anionic salts only as necessary to formulate for low to negative DCAD.
